Without further ado, let’s discuss everything you need to know about undergraduate premed scholarships!

Table of Contents

Undergraduate Premed Scholarship Overview

In this section, we will look at some common categories of undergraduate premed scholarships. Scholarships can be based on one’s identities, merits, financial needs, and special interests. Understanding the difference between these categories will help you narrow down your best fit options. Although we are looking at each category separately, many scholarships offered to premeds involve a mixture of these categories.

Identity-Based Scholarships

Identity-based scholarships are often created to support students with specific personal and social identities. These identities can be divided into several categories, which can include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • race,
  • ethnicity,
  • cultural background,
  • sexual orientation,
  • gender,
  • disabilities,
  • and other community affiliations.

A few examples of identity-based scholarships for undergraduate premed students are scholarships for women in STEM, scholarships for first generation STEM students, and scholarships for students from an ethnic minority group. Usually, identity-based scholarships are offered only to those with specific identities as indicated by the scholarship organization. However, in certain cases, eligibility for identity-based scholarships can be extended to those who are advocates of a community, but do not necessarily identify as a member of said community.

Need-Based Scholarships

Need-based scholarships are awarded to those who demonstrate a strong need for financial assistance during their undergraduate careers. To be eligible for these scholarships, you must provide specific proof of low-income status, usually determined by the scholarship organization. Usually, this comes in the form of tax-return documents. However, you may also be asked to supply bank statements, letters of need, and other proof of financial hardship. Typically, need-based scholarships do not have a set award amount. Instead, each applicant’s specific need is carefully evaluated based on his/her/their financial background. Then the scholarship organization will determine the final offer given.

Interest-Based Scholarships

Interest-based scholarships are designed for students who demonstrate a strong interest towards a specific subject or social issue. Typically, these awards are given to students who dedicated a significant amount of time learning about a specific interest. For premeds, this can take the form of working in a lab, conducting a research project, or volunteering at a healthcare-related facility.

Merit-Based Scholarships

Merit-based scholarships are awarded to students who have, in some way, demonstrated academic excellence and/or other impressive achievements while pursuing an undergraduate degree. While each scholarship organization has its own set of requirements, the majority of merit-based scholarships tend to focus on one or more of the following: GPA (overall or major-specific), involvement in leadership positions, and community service involvements.

One-Time vs. Renewable/Recurring Scholarships

While one-time scholarship awards are self-explanatory, renewable scholarships follow a more complex process. For renewable scholarships, recipients are often awarded money over the course of several semesters or years. In addition, some organizations have conditional rules for scholarship renewal. These conditions can include maintaining a high GPA and remaining in the same major.

Tips on Searching and Applying for Undergraduate Premed Scholarships

Hopefully, the previous section helped you gain a better understanding of the different types of scholarships for undergraduate premed students. Now, we will give you useful tips to further guide you through the process of searching and applying for your undergraduate premed scholarships!

1. Be specific with your word choice during the search

If you already have an ideal kind of scholarship in mind, you should try to be as specific as possible during the search process. Instead of simply typing “premed scholarships” into the search engine, try using phrases like “minority women in STEM essay scholarships for undergraduate premed students”, or “need-based, premed scholarships for first-generation college students”. By doing this, you will be able to drastically narrow down your options and have the best chance at finding scholarships that you meet the eligibility requirements for.

2. Pay attention to eligibility requirements

Before starting a scholarship application, it is crucial to double-check that you meet all of the eligibility requirements listed. A common mistake that applicants tend to make is assuming that meeting the requirements partially is good enough. Unless stated otherwise by the scholarship organization, you should always make sure that you meet the entire list of eligibility requirements.

3. Start early

Some scholarship applications have several components and may require you to spend a large amount of time preparing for them. For example, you may be expected to submit lengthy writing samples, multiple letters of recommendation, a video essay, documents such as proof of citizenship or income, and transcripts. Since gathering and completing these requirements may be time-consuming, it is important to start the application process as early as possible.

4. Make sure to proof-read

Before submitting your completed application, we highly recommend that you proof-read your entire application and ask at least one person to do the same, especially if the scholarship you are applying to requires a submission of one or more writing prompts. While small spelling and grammar errors will not stop you from communicating your overall message, it can come across as unprofessional and an inability to pay attention to small details.

5. Don’t be afraid to reach out

If you feel unsure about the requirements of a  scholarship, do not hesitate to reach out to the organization offering the scholarship. Whether you are uncertain about meeting the eligibility requirements, or need clarification on the submission deadline, reaching out to the organization is your best chance at ensuring that you are completing your application correctly.

Now, without further ado, here is a detailed list of available undergraduate premed scholarships! Good luck!
